Today, we arrived at opening time at the museum.  To do this we had to leave very early in the morning, before the sun was up.  Cruised the Autobahn at a high rate of speed and found a surprisingly close parking place less than a block away from the front door! Now this museum is not small... it is 5 large floors of fantastic exhibit

The first place we visited at the museum was the Dinosaur exhibit.  It was the first room just to the left of the front entrance. Since it was just a couple days before Christmas, they had a big bow on one of the animatronic dinos. It was fun to see. The boys hesitated to pose in front of an Allosaurus that was moving,

Following the dinosaur exhibit, we found ourselves in the Tibet exhibit.  This consisted of a number of great dioramas of the animals, places, people and the culture of Tibet. Here are a couple of detail shots of the animals found there.  The vultures were quite realistic and well done. There was also a couple great te

Sometimes, viewing things in other countries gives a new perspective on things.  Aquariums are no exception to this.  It was very clearly illustrated to us in the Canary islands.  Tenerife was where we visited the European version of the American Sea World.

While traveling through the corridors, we were drawn in by a demonstration.  The boys helped to strip the meat of a leaf away, leaving only the veins of the leaf.  The final product was incredibly detailed.  It is a great study of the circulatory system of the common leaf... something that is easy to overlook. One of the interesting exhibits that I do not recall seeing it's equal in any museum was the Myths and Legends exhibit.  It illustrated some of the unproven claims that have been described over the years.  It was very creative.  I only wished my understanding of German was better to have got more out of it at the time.  With that in mind, I frequen

On the third floor, this exhibit is well done.  It is an interactive display that places the visitor in the middle of the environments that you would typically find in the various parts of Africa. The signature dioramas were well detailed.  I wish I had the plaques for some of these, but self-explanation is easy to find by the nature

On the second floor, the space exhibit we fascinating to look at!  It is the first time that I have ever seen a space exhibit outside of the USA, and it was apparent, too. Now don't get me wrong, all the exhibits I have seen in the USA are good, but there is a definite bias shown in the display.  Whether by design

Easily, the most impressive part of the museum was the Reptile Zoo.  I have been to many museums, zoos and exhibits, but this exceeds any I have ever seen.  There are over 50 terraria housing about 200 animals.  These exhibits are designed so well that you can come within inches of the specimens and study every detail of movement, markings and more

The Hohensalzburg Fortress is perched high on the peak of Festungsberg. The castle served as a refuge for the Archbishops when ever they felt threatened. The best way to get to the fortress is by taking the funicular. You can walk up the mountain if you wish but the funicular is quick, inexpensive and very comfortable. The ride takes less than a mi

The Marionette Museum is only 2 rooms but it is well done, you can see how they make marionettes and many of the puppets, like the original marionettes from Amadeus, the Wizard of Oz, Prices and Princesses, troll and villain plus much more. We were able to see a sampling and this is such an art form. The puppeteers are truly amazing.

After the fortress we walked through town window shopping and made a stop at Mozart Square where there is a statue of Mozart and we even watched the ice skating. In the middle of the platz, they have an ice skating ring for the holidays. We continued to walk through the streets to Mozart's birthplace, this modest place is where Mozart was born and

Next we headed to Neuschwanstein, It was a glorious scenic drive up the mountains. It is quite a walk up a steep hill to the castle but in the royal fantasy they offer horse drawn carriage rides up and down the mountain. I had to do this, there is just something so fairy tale about riding up to the castle in a horse drawn carriage. we squeezed in,

Out first stop was a the Linderhof Palace, built by King Ludwig II. In 1867 Ludwig visited France and the Versailles Palace and he fell in love with it and decided to build a Royal Villa keeping with the Versailles theme even though it was more of a "homely version" in Linderhof instead of a grand palace. He was already constructing Neuschwanstein

Today we went into the Alps in on a castle day.  The Alps were very impressive how the foot hills have trees and the peaks are barren because it is too high for anything to grow. This is the first day we ran into real snow that was several feet deep, the higher we went the more snow there was (logically). It was a clear day and absolutely

There is an enterprise office just two stops up on the U-bahn and they had a great rate on a small car for 4. Our car has snow tires which is great since we are heading to Austria and Switzerland
