Jet lag is a drag! |
We arrived in Germany after an overnight flight at 8:00 am. We usually take a cab to out to the place we are staying, but we decided to use the s-bahn to get into the city from the airport and then take the u-bahn across town to our house. We packed light so as do be able to maneuvers more easily. The underground in Munich is really great easy to maneuver with escalators going up and down along with stairs to handle luggage. We got to our stop and found the guest house we are staying in. It is quite lovely, it sits behind the main house with a fantastic courtyard, it is completely fenced in and you need a key to access the courtyard. It is a 2 bedroom, the master and a nice loft for the kids, a good size dinning room and compact kitchen with a large bathroom. We could not be happier and our host are the nicest people. In fact our TV in the living room even has surround sound and they have provided some movies and cd's for our enjoyment.
After getting settled in and unpacked we took on in search of what used to be the German Wal-mart, now the Real. Is is just like a Wal-mart, in a European sort of way. We did some grocery shopping and got our supplies and even had a quick bite to eat in the McDonald's in the store. The one thing we did forget is bags, you have to provide your own shopping bags, so we tried to pile everything in the backpack and actually had to purchase a bag. We will however be prepared next time. Like shopping in any foreign market there are items that you recognize and items you don't. Of course we forgot the translation book and in local market like this in the residential section you will very rarely find English speaking personnel. It can be quite intimidating. Especially in the meat section. I went to the deli to try and figure out what may be ham, after debating with myself I decided to go for it, I was able to point and show with my fingers a possible size of thickness and it worked out ok, next time however I think I will use the book. We also found cereal and produce and even a German version of mac and cheese. If you are patient and search long enough you can find what you are looking for, the key is to not get frustrated.
We spent the evening in with some hot tomatoes soup and sandwiches and guess what, it snowed, what could be more perfect than on our first day it snowing. Now it was only like a 1/4 inch and barely stuck to the ground and was gone by morning but it was still magical. We turned in early this evening to try and catch up on our sleep. We were definitely exhausted.
