The Best Things To Do When Visiting Costa Rica

By David Easterling

So you're traveling to Central America... whether for business or pleasure, Costa Rica is full of rich history and natural beauty. This country is named after its "rich coasts," so why not explore all that Costa Rica has to offer!

If you're not into the tropical regions of this country, there are areas of lush forests and wildlife reserves that are sure to please the eye. And, if you're not really into the whole nature side of traveling, Costa Rica is one to entertain with many indoor theaters and museums. Also, don't forget about the wonderful and eclectic places to dine while traveling. The capital city of Costa Rica, San Jose, is known for its culinary adventures and great atmosphere!

Enjoy Beautiful Beaches and Coasts

Enough about food for now, let's begin with the coastal adventures throughout this country. Costa Rica is located on the Pacific side of Central America and offers many opportunities to soak up the sun.

If you are looking to get more vitamin D, you should head to Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. This area offers an 80 mile coastline filled with palm trees and waves that are ideal for surfing. Along this coast, many sightseeing experiences are available as well.

Why not visit one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Arenal Volcano at a natural park in Fortuna, Costa Rica? Or how about relaxing in a natural bath in the Tabac?n Hot Springs? This spa treatment surrounded by flowing waterfalls and tropical foliage will make this experience one to never forget.

There are a variety of treatments the spa offers that include volcanic mud wraps, coffee exfoliations and beautiful scenery. With dinner included, this spa day comes in around 85 dollars USD. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the money is absolutely worth this unique spa treatment.

Create Your Own Unique Adventure

Enough relaxing, it's time to start exploring! Costa Rica offers many more sightseeing options that don't include the beach. The Ca?o Negro Wildlife Refuge in the south of Fortuna draws in hundreds of wildlife including crocodiles, water birds and sloths! Get out your binoculars because this attraction will help anyone connect with their wild side. This natural exhibit is known for its friendly staff and the spectacular views that can be seen best during damp months from May to December.

If that's not adventurous enough for you, how about zip-lining through some of Costa Rica's lush canopy layers? This thrill offers unforgettable scenery filled with mountain ranges, wildlife and oceans.

Concerned that zip-lining may provide too much adventure? You may also choose to connect with wildlife by taking gondola-style rides or hiking through suspended bridges in the forest. There is a way to experience the unique atmosphere of Costa Rica for every type of person.

Indoor Activities While Traveling To Costa Rica

If oceans, wildlife, and waterfalls don't appeal to one, Costa Rica also offers indoor activities that excite the inventive tourist in all of us.

Teatro Nacional is an architectural source of pride for Costa Rica since 1897. This building is one of a kind and is available for guided tours while being home to a rare culinary experience filled with gourmet creations from Soul Caf?.

The Museo de Arte Costarricense is also a huge tourist attraction known for its wonderful works of art and eye-catching designs all made by local artisans. This is another great way to connect to all of the culture comprised in Costa Rica.

How about a walk around the campus of a top local university? The oldest and biggest university in the country is the University of Costa Rica. The main campus is situated in the San Jose province. Founded more than 150 years ago in 1843, this large public university serves nearly 40,000 students each year, with a huge variety of programs in fields that include computer and information sciences, agriculture, social sciences and health sciences, to name a few.

Enjoy Delicious Food At Top Places To Eat

After all of this sightseeing and exotic adventuring, you may have worked up quite an appetite. Now it's time to explore all of the great dining options throughout Costa Rica.

The Restaurant la Terrasse won a certificate of Excellence in 2014 for its charming scenery and fantastic food and wine options. It has more of a French bistro feel, but is very unique for this area.

Another cultural experience can be found while dining at the Restaurante Grano de Oro in San Jose. This menu features local options and gives visitors a true taste of Costa Rican cuisine.

Whether you are visiting Latin America for pleasure, or you are doing business in the region, Costa Rica offers quite a unique nearshore travel experience. From soaking up the sun on long beaches, gazing at exquisite volcanos, zip-lining through a scenic forest or simply enjoying a uniquely local meal, there are adventures to suit every personality. There is no excuse to stay inside all day, when there is so much to explore in this beautiful country.
