Top 5 Winter Road Trips in Ontario

By Robin C Forsyth

You may have noticed that Christmas music has arrived throughout malls everywhere. You know what that means? Retail stores play Christmas early far too early nowadays. Yes, that is correct. But also, the holidays are fast approaching.

If you are lucky you may have some time off over the holiday break. If you are exceptionally lucky you may even have a day off that you are not running around like a crazy person trying to entertain or visit every relative you have. You know what that means? You have a great opportunity for a winter day road trip. I'm a huge fan of the road trip especially the day trip variety. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful province, that has so much to offer.

Here's my list of top 5 day road trips in Ontario.

Collingwood:

This is a no-brainer for those Ski/snowboard enthusiasts - Blue Mountain, enough said. I am not one of those, but I do love Collingwood. Blue Mountain Village and downtown Collingwood have tons of fun, unique shops and lots of great places to eat. If you are making the trip on the weekend, check out the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster at Blue Mountain - I've never done this but it is definitely on my bucket list! If you are on a family road trip and can stay a bit longer there is also an amazing indoor 4 season water park called Plunge. Want a more relaxing or romantic getaway? Check out the Scandinave Spa and take a relaxing day before the holiday stress storm blows in.

Port Perry:

Port Perry is a known tourist destination because of its beautiful, Victorian-era downtown, with many restaurants, caf?s, bookstores, galleries, antique shops and other retail outlets. Lake Scugog located in Port Perry is also a fantastic and popular destination for ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Elora:

Elora is self-proclaimed as 'Ontario's Most Beautiful Village'. I get it. There's the famous Tooth of Time waterfall and Old Mill located downtown. The Elora Mill, which was once powered by the waterfall is Ontario's only remaining five-story mill and has now been renovated into a beautiful Inn and restaurant. Elora is famous for its epic gorge - in the summer months many people take an exhilarating ride down the gorge in an inner tube. I doubt you will want to be in the water in December unless hypothermia is on your wish list, so instead check out the various boutique shops and art galleries. If you are a movie buff, check out a flick at The Gorge Cinema; Canada's oldest continuously running repertory theater.

Niagara-on-the-lake:

There are many shops and specialty stores in Niagara-on-the-lake. You can even take a romantic horse and carriage ride. Perhaps the most popular thing to do though, is visit an Ontario Winery and take in some wine-tasting. There are lots of fun winter wine events in Niagara like the Stocking Days of Christmas. Make sure if you plan on getting your wine-on to designate a sober drive to take you home OR stay over at one of Niagara's dreamy bed & breakfast's, Inns or spa resorts.

Haliburton Highlands:

Another item on my bucket list is to go dog sledding. I mean I love dogs, I love sleds - it seems like a no-brainer activity that I would love. Winterdance is an Ontario dog sledding tour company in Haliburton Highlands. One of the awesome things about Winterdance is they actually teach you how to drive a dog team. They offer 2 hour, 1/2 day, full day, moonlite or multi-day dog sledding trips. Also located in Haliburton Highlands is Sir Sam's Ski & Bike, which offers loads of fun winter activities like snowboarding/skiing & snowshoeing.
