Renting a Villa in Italy

By Karina Popa

Just imagine living a month or so near a beautiful lake or spending your summer under the warmth of the Tuscan sun. Renting a villa in Italy is the perfect way to enjoy the high life that you often come across in the travel writings of those more fortunate. It's like they're telling everyone how great of a time they had meeting the locals and relaxing in the best climate ever.

While it is true that we are not all that rich to purchase fancy houses in the greatest locations of Italy (Sicily, Veneto or Tuscany), we don't have to see only the dark side. You can play the role of the master for a couple of weeks if you decide to rent a villa. Sounds good doesn't it?

This is the concept that will surely make you dream big and transform your vacation into more than a short time spent abroad. Not to mention that it will make your friends and family very jealous.

There are 2 methods when it comes to finding a rental villa: you can either use the help of an agency or contact the owner of the villa directly.

How do I know if renting a villa in Italy is the best choice for me?

It is true that house renting is not a good overnight solution. When you plan on renting a villa, you should think about staying at least a week or even longer. But if you want to stay less, there are owners that rent them for 2-3 days, especially during the off-season. Furthermore, the villas which are perceived as bed and breakfast locations can also allow shorter periods of renting.

Renting a villa is also the right choice for the smaller groups, larger families or circle of friends. If you only plan on staying for a short time, you can decide to rent an apartment (in town or separated as a unit in a huge villa.

What surprises should I expect?

First of all, don't think about hotel services (the linens will be changed weekly, there will be no front desk, and sometimes you won't even have dryers or washers). It is better to ask in advance.

How much will it cost me to rent a villa in Italy?

Prices depend very much on location, size, degree of luxury and the way in which people decide on sharing the bill. It costs less for a group of minimum 4 to share a villa compared to a couple renting the same place.

The daily rates per person start around $15 or $25 (for those which host more people) and most often they go around $50, up to $100.

Before you go ahead with the booking, you should ask which taxes go into the total price (you should have the normal utilities included - water, gas, electricity). If you have additional requests, like phone chargers or heating, you should discuss directly with the owners.

Renters are also expected to pay a deposit that goes around 10-30 % of the cost and a cleaning fee ($35-150).
