Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma south of Tulsa |
Scientific Name: Siren intermedia (Mythical sea nymph / in between)
This salamander can grow up to 14 inches with a current maximum size of 24 inches.
The lesser Siren gets its name from its ability to communicate with audible clicking sounds, and is believed to be the most primitive salamander in the world.
It is a peculiar creature that I thought might have been an eel of some kind at first sight. Look closely at the photos and see that its only two legs are used to propel it and search for food.
