Scientific name: Scaphirhynchus platorynchus (Shovel-nosed and having a broad and flat nose)
Another peculiar beast of the Oklahoma waterways, the Shovelnose Sturgeon only grows to 10 or 20 inches, however, the state record is 29 inches at almost 3 pounds.
The Shovelnose Sturgeon is slow growing, and does not attain sexual maturity until 10-12 years of age. They are long-lived with some individuals reaching 75 years of age or more.
