In the Boats and Marine Navigation section the Fishing Boat the Maria that is called an "Ewer" was built in 1880 for use in the North Sea as a commercial fishing boat. It was one of the last of it's kind. The vessel took over most of the room, and was at full mast, there were cutaways showing the some of the quarters and conditions that they crew lived in. The kids found the replica of the rat the most amusing. The Maria was one of the last a wooden hull sailing vessel and from there came the steel hulls and steam engines. We looked the replica of the Steam Tug Renzo from the 1930's and then a rescue cruiser called the Theadore Heuss from the 1960's. These ships represented 3 of the most important periods in shipping: sail, steam and diesel.
The development of the sailing vessels started Slave powered vessels that traveled the Mediterranean sea for trade and shine that was expensive and labor intensive, they ahydded sails when voyaging the Atlantic, The development of the Caravel and other three masted ships followed, that opened up the world. the world, these ships were able to reach all four corners and led way to the tall ships. This image was quite impressive it actually showed the differences between merchant explorers and ships of war.
In the modern ship area the best exhibit was the cruise exhibit, in the 1900's the age of the luxury passenger liner, countries were competing to be the best, we saw a model of the Kaiser Wilhlem II with a cross section cut out, it was impressive you could see why all the return air shafts were necessary when looking at the boiler room and all the coal. There was also a showing of the Sija Europa cruiser and car ferry that was used to lessen road traffic. As you exit the cruise area you are transported to a promenade lounge like where the first class passengers used to sit with teak wood rails and crass fixtures, it is a great photo op. You can also see the wheel house area that gives a the kids the opportunity ti be their own captain.
In the naval section there is an actual authentic u-1 submarine. This submarine had cutouts all along the side and allows you to get a good view of what is inside from the engine room, crews quarters and mess, captains quarters and even the torpedo tube. This u-1 sub has been in the museum since 1921.
At the end of tine Marine exhibit comes a lot of sonar and measuring equipment through he ages, search sights and even a Diving Area with different diving suits and a bathysphere. More articles Tacktick by Suunto - Wireless, Solar-Powered Instruments for Your Boats Wire never goes well with water, but the sun does. This is why wireless, solar-powered navigational instruments are the best for your boats and yachts. Tacktick, the world leader in wireless marine electronics, offers a wide range of instruments that uses Micronet technology, which enables each unit to run solely by solar power. Gas Lubrication: Gyros for Nuclear Submarines During the 1960s, scientists at the Admiralty Compass Observatory (ACO), Slough, were working on the development of gas lubricated bearings for the first generation of British nuclear-powered submarines. In the days before satellite-aided navigation systems the warships had to rely on inertial systems based upon gyroscopes. It had been found that if gyro rotors were to hold accurately to an axis over long periods of time, low friction and vibration levels in their bearing were essential. It was for this reason that aerodynamic gas bearings had been chosen, but these needed to be made to an unprecedented level of precision. German Rocketry and the Second World War Not long ago, I was discussing some issues about air superiority during the Second World War in Europe. Not only did NAZI Germany have superior naval vessels (Bismarck), and U-Boats (submarines), they also had a superior Air Force. The Luftwaffe had incredibly skilled pilots and the best airplanes in the world up to that date. Advice for Beginning Boaters One of the most fun aspects of shopping for a boat is that there are so many different types designed for so many different activities. There are even general-purpose crafts that work well for fishing, skiing and cruising. These boats, because they are so adaptable, are the best choice for most boaters. Having Fun With Large RC Gas Boats RC gas powered large boats are the top of the line rtr boats, and you could pay anywhere from 500-1000$ for one of these boats. Many come with a v-hull or deep vee hull. You're probably familiar with cigar boats. That's what the V-Hull and Deep-V hull look like. Gasoline models are run by a 20-30cc motor with a speed range of up to 30mph or more. An RC-Gas Boat is the perfect choice for the expert RC boater, as it is the biggest and fastest model. W:7,S:60 |
