In the Boats and Marine Navigation section the Fishing Boat the Maria that is called an "Ewer" was built in 1880 for use in the North Sea as a commercial fishing boat. It was one of the last of it's kind. The vessel took over most of the room, and was at full mast, there were cutaways showing the some of the quarters and conditions that they crew lived in. The kids found the replica of the rat the most amusing. The Maria was one of the last a wooden hull sailing vessel and from there came the steel hulls and steam engines. We looked the replica of the Steam Tug Renzo from the 1930's and then a rescue cruiser called the Theadore Heuss from the 1960's. These ships represented 3 of the most important periods in shipping: sail, steam and diesel.
The development of the sailing vessels started Slave powered vessels that traveled the Mediterranean sea for trade and shine that was expensive and labor intensive, they ahydded sails when voyaging the Atlantic, The development of the Caravel and other three masted ships followed, that opened up the world. the world, these ships were able to reach all four corners and led way to the tall ships. This image was quite impressive it actually showed the differences between merchant explorers and ships of war.
In the modern ship area the best exhibit was the cruise exhibit, in the 1900's the age of the luxury passenger liner, countries were competing to be the best, we saw a model of the Kaiser Wilhlem II with a cross section cut out, it was impressive you could see why all the return air shafts were necessary when looking at the boiler room and all the coal. There was also a showing of the Sija Europa cruiser and car ferry that was used to lessen road traffic. As you exit the cruise area you are transported to a promenade lounge like where the first class passengers used to sit with teak wood rails and crass fixtures, it is a great photo op. You can also see the wheel house area that gives a the kids the opportunity ti be their own captain.
In the naval section there is an actual authentic u-1 submarine. This submarine had cutouts all along the side and allows you to get a good view of what is inside from the engine room, crews quarters and mess, captains quarters and even the torpedo tube. This u-1 sub has been in the museum since 1921.
At the end of tine Marine exhibit comes a lot of sonar and measuring equipment through he ages, search sights and even a Diving Area with different diving suits and a bathysphere.
