Ken has retired from a 45 year career in hospital administration and has partnered with his wife Myra in the start-up of Note-Able Workshop to manufacture and market outdoor furniture. Ken has been active in the various Methodist churches, Rotary and national healthcare associations.
Myra retired from Real Estate Marketing/Administrative/IT arena. Myra is also involved in the local Methodist Church and various local charities.
Always having an interest in woodworking, the new company is a natural for Ken and Myra’s future challenge.
The goal of Note-Able Workshop is to eventually become a work training organization to assist those who are working their way out of poverty, those who are subjects of the county Community Sentencing Court. This project is designed to serve those who are serious about improving their lives within a Christian atmosphere.
Until the phase of re-training begins, a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of furniture will be donated to local Christian missions.
When we discovered the outdoor furniture system based upon the use of Western Red Cedar, we decided this would be a product that would work for us to carry out our mission.
Western Red Cedar (WRC) comes from a highly managed forestry in the Northwestern portion of USA. This means we are not depleting our natural resources. Since we are using “reclaimed” wood (after wood is cut to standard lengths, the wood that might have been discarded) is then used for our furniture. WRC is different than the cedar trees that grow in the Midwest. It is extremely resistant to insects and decay. It dries quickly because it does not retain moisture. It is attractive and strong, but not so heavy as to be unmanageable. It cuts, sands, and assembles beautifully.
This cedar does not require finishing products because it naturally ages to a soft silver patina. If finishing is preferred, we can offer suggestions for the product to use, or we can finish it for you.
