Growing up with a southern mom who was a great cook, Tigger learned at a young age to appreciate good southern cooking, even while living in the northeast United States. For all those passionate about such comfort food can understand the occasional cravings that must be filled form time to time.

Today, Tigger and several friends were delighted to find Momma Dean's Soul Food Kitchen in south Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover

The parking lot is small and today (Sunday lunchtime) was packed! The restaurant itself could easily hide from discovery for years, even by people who drive by it regularly. The front of the building is rather non-descriptive outside of the sign, but there is only one image that comes to mind when a sign reads, "Soul Food"!

Upon entering, the tables are eclectic sets of varying size dining areas plus a few booths in the back. Seat yourself, but don't expect a menu. It is written on the white board on the wall in the back but plan to look on the menu on-line on a smart phone.

Even though the decor is not professionally designed, Momma Dean's was clean and very busy (always a good sign) and the waitstaff were running hard. It was obvious they had been running hard for two days. Momma Dean herself told Tigger that they had catered two large events the day before (150 & 200 people) plus kept the restaurant going. Despite all the exhaustion everyone provided service with a smile and when they were reminded of something forgotten, it appeared quickly. Too often Tigger's family have experienced places where forgotten items never make it to the table but this was not the case here, they did very well.

Nothing But the TRUTH!!
...and the Best Comfort Food!

It all boils down to one thing, the food and the experience. Tigger was there for about 90 minutes but a lot of that had to do with visiting with friends.

The drinks are served in large mason jars, ice tea, lemonade, water and more.  The food served on cafeteria style plates. Roles of paper towels are on the table instead of napkin dispensers. All of which accented the family run atmosphere.

Momma Dean's son works the kitchen and other friends and family members keep the food moving out and the dishes returning to the kitchen. Momma Dean herself will walk through the dinning room and clean tables and visit with her guests. Tigger had a very nice chat with her at the end of the meal.

The meals are all $10 and include an entree, two sides, a bread and a dessert. Children and Senior prices are also available.

Tigger, being a true lover of great catfish decided to try it out.  It was fried in a crisp corn meal breading and was light and flakey on the inside. One danger of catfish is the risk of a fishy taste but there was NO fishy taste here, it was not even greasy! On the plate were corn fritters loaded with crisp fresh-tasting corn and purple hull peas just like mom used to make. MMMmm mmmm mmmm!!

The corn bread that came with the meal was notable, too. Each 'slice' was custom patted and dropped in the fryer. Sometimes it came in flat patties and sometimes it came in round log-shapped pieces, but they were all good. They seemed more reminiscent of good hush puppies, some of the best ever!

Tigger's wife had the fried chicken and said, "It was moist and tender on the inside, crisp on the outside and the juices were sealed in. The Momma Dean's seasoning made it melt in your mouth. Not over salty, a perfect mixture of spice and texture!"

She had the fried zucchini that must have been flash fried, the outside was crunchy and crispy while the inside had a nice soft firmness that was delicious and flavorful.

For dessert the six at Tigger's table had five servings of banana pudding and one lemon cake, all of which taste like they were created by the best home cooking.

Good Home Cooked Meal, Just Like Grandma Used to Make

Despite the setting, Tigger could simply close his eyes and feel just like he was back in Grandma's kitchen. The smells, the flavors and even the family sounds all around. If you are feeling a little home sick for the old south, go to Mamma Dean's Soul Food Kitchen!
