Deep Sea Fishing in Grand Cayman

Back

We caught nothing but barracuda but we had a lot of FUN doing it!!
In January we went on a Disney Cruise on the Disney Magic out of Galveston. One of the stops was at Grand Cayman and as this was a celebration trip for our older son who is graduating in a couple months we let him choose deep sea fishing.

Our self booked excursion landed us with a great captain at Grand Cayman Deep Sea Fishing Charters.

NOTE: For the rest of this article please realize that our whole family is very hearty when it comes to riding on boats. The videos below are shot on very rough waters. It is not always this way. Our captain gave us the option to not go but we were more than happy to ride the waves for six hours!

Since we did not book the excursion through Disney we had to walk around to the meeting place a couple blocks away from the docks. It was no big deal and the sidewalks are very good in that area in anticipation of a lot of foot traffic to and from the ships. We just read the directions carefully and found ourselves sitting on the front steps of a small church building on the water front.

The lady who drove us across the island to the fishing dock is the owners wife. She was fun and even gave us a little bit of tour on the way pointing out interesting sites that we passed. Once at the dock our captain met us, a seaworthy fellow, indeed! He warned us that the waves are a bit rough and we had a few options. We could cancel the trip, we could stick to calmer waters and possible not catch that much fish or we could brave the waves.

The day was very calm, the water was as clear as any of the most beautiful scenes in the Caribbean or even the South Pacific. It was breath taking, to say the least!! We shot a lot of photos on the way through the bay.

Once we started through the opening between the protective jetties the whole world changed. Our 31 foot Bertram seemed quite significant until we started hitting waves the peaked at over 6 feet. Many times, the water splashed over the bow of the ship.

We fished along the top of a very deep sea wall just off the island. We trawled along the north end of Grand Cayman and back again in about 5 hours of up and down waves. The waves were so rough that one of our group started to feel a little ill near the end but we all made it through with no need of the paper barf-bags that were provided just in case.

One thing to keep in mind, though. Plan to not use the toilet if you can. If you use the toilet any paper cannot be placed in the toilet. There is a bag next to the toilet for used toilet paper. It is a bit odd but it must be done to meet environmental requirements.

Overall, this was one of the best experiences we have had on an excursion. On a scale of zero to ten we would definitely give it a 12!! If you have no other plans for your stay in Grand Cayman on an excursion or an extended stay on the island DO NOT MISS a day with the good folks over at Grand Cayman Deep Sea Fishing Charters!
