Tenerife, Our Island in the Canary Islands

The Disney ship docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Sunday, May 20, 2007.  The arrival was breath-taking to say the least.  The Island of Tenerife is a dramatically landscaped volcanic island with cities, villages and roads nestled between steep green hills.  Originally this was a brown island, but the natives have been bringing greenery from Africa for decades.  This has brought new life to these hills and valleys.

Our early morning arrival was exciting despite a heavy cloud cover.  The port sent out their welcoming party in the form of two fire boats shooting water over a hundred feet in either direction.

The rugged landscape hugged this small village a few miles from Santa Cruz, our home for the day.  During our drive across the island, we saw a number of valleys that were just like this one.  Villages, orchards on the hillsides and roads streaming between the peeks.

As we got off the boat, we were greeted by traditional dance and costume from the Canary Islands.  The music was lively and inviting.

We crossed from the East side of the island over the north face of the volcanic mountain in the middle of the island. The west side of the island welcomed us with clear sunny skies.  All the clouds had gathered on the east side of the mountains and were trapped there making our trip across the island seem quite tropical.

As we traveled by bus, we passed this beautiful black sand beach.  It is a popular stop for residents and visitors alike.

As we left the island, Jennifer and I had dinner at Palos.  A high quality restaurant on the Disney ships for adults only.  It final meal in the Canary Islands was unforgettable as we watched the sunset right outside the window at our table.
