The Barcelona Aquarium

Back

L'Aquarium de Barcelona
The Barcelona Aquarium is located near the dock in the ship's harbor and is easily accessible by the Barceloneta metro station.

The aquarium and Imax theater is just a short walk around the harbor. We had a great walk looking at all the expensive yacht and wandering through a sidewalk market where local vendors were selling leather good, clothing, scarves, decorative items and much more. One thing to keep in mind when visiting Barcelona is that the city is know for it's pick pockets so we were always very careful with or belongings.

The aquarium is 3 levels. We began our journey walking down a long landscaped ramp to the bottom floor and straight into the jaws of a Megaladon. The aquarium offers souvenir photos of your party standing inside of the shark Jaws.  These photos can be purchased on the top floor by the Cafeteria. Of course we bought our photo, it's not everyday that we get to stand in Shark Jaws.

This aquarium has 20 different theme tanks of many Mediterranean fish species that we have never seen before. One of the more interesting species were the cuddle fish. These fish actually cuddled with each other in pairs and in groups.

We also saw egg sacs of Lesser spotted dogfish, these are small Mediterranean sharks that blend in with the sea bed.  These sacs had tendrils on them and were attached to branches for then to hold onto to avoid being carried off by the current. They are also known as mermaids purses because of their shape.

The huge Oceanarium, is a big round tank that contains 4.5 million liters of water. There is a moving sidewalk and it takes you around the the tank. In here we saw are a about 80 different species of fish and variety of sharks including Sandbar and Sandtiger Sharks,  Black tip sharks and Ocean sunfish. These ocean sunfish are one of the strangest things I have ever seen, they are flat with 2 wing like fins that flap to help them swim.

This is the tank that they offer dives to the public. For a modest fee, if you are a certified diver you can spend an hour in this tank with the sharks. We found it quite humorous that in the sign up they advertise that no insurance is provided. Hmmm I wonder what they know that we don't.

Next on the tour we went Upstairs to the Cafeteria where we had lunch and Planeta Aqua. Lunch was fine, it was normal fast food. We had burgers and hot dogs. Now don't let the pictures fool you, they show a big thick burger in the picture but in reality it is a small thin patty. It was still very good though.

In Planet Water we went inside and explored a submarine, found a tropical forest, went through the belly of a whale and even saw some penguins.
