5 Best Disney World Special Events for Adults

By Elizabeth R Perry

One of the most persistent myths about Walt Disney World is that it's only for kids, but there are so many great attractions and activities adults will enjoy. Throughout the year, Walt Disney World also offers amazing seasonal events, and many of these are geared specifically to adults. Here are my top five recommendations for special events adults will love.

Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival (March - May): Every spring, Epcot transforms into a garden paradise with gorgeous flower displays and fun Disney character topiaries throughout the park. The festival also features presentations on interior design and gardening by HGTV stars. Recently the festival also added Garden Marketplaces, which serve dishes showcasing fresh ingredients and international flavors.

Visitors Tip: For tea enthusiasts, this is the only time of year that Epcot offers a guided tour of the English Tea Garden in the UK Pavilion - and it's free!

Star Wars Weekends (May - June): A must-do for any Star Wars fan, Star Wars Weekends takes over Hollywood Studios on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The event includes appearances from Star Wars celebrities (recent years included Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams, among many others), a special parade and fireworks show, and Star Wars character meets throughout the park.

Visitors Tip: If you want to meet popular characters such as Darth Vader, Chewbacca, or Boba Fett, visit them as early in the day as you can - their lines will be very long.

Epcot International Food and Wine Festival (September - November): Undoubtedly Epcot's most popular special event, this festival features marketplace booths throughout Epcot's World Showcase with tasting-size dishes and drinks from around the world. The booths include the countries of Epcot's World Showcase, as well as many others such as Scotland, Brazil, Australia, and South Africa. The event also features specialty meals, tastings, and cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs (for an additional cost).

Visitors Tip: This festival is very, very popular - try to visit on a weekday for shorter lines at the booths.

Candlelight Processional (November - December): This show is a traditional telling of the Christmas story with a celebrity narrator and full choir, taking place at the America Gardens Theater several times a night starting in late November. The performance does not have an additional cost beyond park admission, but the theater can fill up quickly, so arrive early.

Visitors Tip: If you would like a guaranteed seat for the Candlelight Processional, consider a dining package, which includes guaranteed seats and lunch or dinner at select restaurants in Epcot.

Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights (November - January): The Streets of America at Hollywood Studios are covered every holiday season with a dazzling display of millions upon millions of lights. The lights blanket the buildings and moving displays sparkle overhead. Access to this display is included in park admission.

Visitors Tip: There isn't really a slow time for this display, but you may find fewer crowds if you visit during a showing of Fantasmic! or shortly before the park closes.
