'Tis the Season for Grand Canyon Helicopter and Airplane Tours

By Kelly Kirbee

You may not realize it, but the cooler fall and winter months are ideal for taking an air tour of the Grand Canyon. You can tour by helicopter or plane, and taking one of these aerial tours is a unique and fun way to enjoy a holiday travel experience.

You can catch one of these tours if you'll be in Vegas, or you can take one out of the airport by the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. If you're interested in air-only tours, you'll be able to find them at both locations. The tours that depart from Vegas and go to the West Rim include landing options as well, on top of the rim, or on the canyon floor.

Landing Tour With Picnic

One Vegas helicopter tour in particular is quite popular with travelers to the canyon. It comes with a helicopter descent to the canyon floor where a fun champagne picnic awaits. This tour comes with the option to include a rafting tour along the smooth waters of the Colorado River. The tours that land on top of the rim are fun too, these allow you to visit the Skywalk.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a famous glass bridge that allows you to stand 4000 feet above the canyon floor on a panel of glass. And when you walk to the far edge of the bridge, you'll be 70 feet beyond the rim of the canyon. The view from that vantage point is quite impressive.

When you book your Vegas helicopter tour, you can opt for a basic tour or upgrade to the deluxe tour. If you take a basic tour, you'll need to take a shuttle van to the airfield in Boulder City, which is about a half an hour outside of Vegas. If you upgrade to the deluxe tour, you get to fly in an EcoStar 130 sightseeing chopper and lift off from the Strip in Vegas, plus you'll get free limo transportation to and from your hotel.

Comprehensive Tours

The helicopter tours of the South Rim last 30 or 50 minutes. The longer tour costs a little more, but it gives you a much more comprehensive experience. When you take this tour, you'll fly over about 75 percent of the entire National Park.

The airplanes that fly out of Vegas cover the same ground as the helicopters, but they cost less since they carry more passengers per tour. You can opt for an air-only tour or you can book a tour where the airplane lands at the canyon. Take the landing tour if you can, so you can experience the canyon on foot.

While the airplanes can't land on the canyon floor, you can transfer to a helicopter after you plane lands and get to the bottom of the canyon that way. The West Rim airplane tours can come with add ons like a raft ride on the Colorado River, and access to the Skywalk. If you're in Vegas, you can book an airplane tour to the South Rim too that comes with a helicopter tour of the South Rim.

Touring The South Rim

When it comes to touring the South Rim, buying a package that includes a fifty-minute airplane tour of the rim is a good option. You'll get to see the same landmarks as seen on the long helicopter tour, including the Dragoon Corridor. This corridor is noted for being the deepest and widest section of the Grand Canyon.

All these Grand Canyon flights are popular, so you want to book your tour at least two weeks ahead of time. Don't wait until the last minute to buy your tour, even waiting 72 hours before departure is risky. You probably won't find open seats, and if you do, you'll probably have to pay more for your tour.

When you're ready to book your tour, do it online, so you can save some money. It is also a very convenient way to book a tour. The savings could be significant. It's not uncommon to save up to 35 percent off the retail cost of a Las Vegas air tour to the Grand Canyon when you buy online.

Watch The Weather

In the winter, you could see snow in the Grand Canyon. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave on your tour, and dress appropriately for the weather. You'll be comfortable while you're in flight because the airplanes and helicopters have climate control. Landing tours are another matter, and you want to be dressed for the weather conditions, so you can fully enjoy your time on the ground at the Grand Canyon.
